The beer industry has evolved and changed significantly over the last 30 years, according to Beer Marketer’s Insights, 2018.
It says that the number of brewers has grown to close to 9,000 permitted breweries operating in the United States, up from 49 in 1983.
Growth in beer industry
The growth in the industry stands out in an otherwise sluggish economy, with the report saying that new breweries continue to find growth opportunities in the beer market.
Market share has also shown notable change with the top five brewers and importers having changed significantly over the last five years.
California is the leading state, with over 1,000 permitted breweries, followed by Washington (499), New York (471), Michigan (452) and Colorado (448).
Small brewers gain market volume
Interestingly, the last 10 years have seen more than 9% of the market volume having moved to smaller brewers and importers from large brewers and importers.
The latest insights also reports continued growth in small and upstart breweries, making the U.S. beer market a dynamic and competitive industry.
